What is Women of Words?
Women of words is a female-only performance space, created to showcase the creative work of women living in Hull and the surrounding region. Women of Words was created by poet and spoken-word performer Vicky Foster, to help address the imbalance in the number of women and men in the traditional Spoken Word scene.
Each month we feature well-known Guest performers, alongside our “open mic” slots, available to all our female audience members, to share their work.
Does Women of Words welcome men as well?
Absolutely, male audience members are a very welcome and valued part of the WOW experience. Please note that Guest and Open Mic slots are available to women only.
When and where do Women of Words meet?
We meet on the first Wednesday of every month from 2pm to 4pm, at Kardomah94, Alfred Gelder Street, Hull HU1 2AN.
Do you charge for admission?
Admission and Open Mic slots are free. We do ask for a “pay as you feel” contribution during the interval, which is used to fund the costs of running WOW and to pay the travel expenses of our guest performers.
Who can book an Open Mic slot? Do I need any previous experience?
No experience is necessary! If you’re a woman with a piece of writing to share, we’d love to see you take your place at our mic and share your words with our lovely, friendly audience. Our open-mic performers include women of all ages and experience levels, from first-time performers to established poets and authors.
How do I book an Open Mic slot?
Look out for our Women of Words host at the start of the event (she’ll be carrying a clipboard and taking names!). We offer all our slots on a first-come, first-served basis. If we don’t have any available slots, we’ll wait-list you for the next event, so you’ll get first dibs on the Open Mic next month.
